Homeowners across the country are feeling the strain of rising premiums, inflation, and more unpredictable weather—and many are realizing their insurance coverage might not stretch as far as they thought.
According to Independent Agent Magazine, new research from Nationwide and The Hanover shows that while 63% of homeowners feel confident in their policies, 57% still worry their coverage may not protect them from certain damages or incidents.
These findings highlight a growing “confidence gap” in homeowners insurance—and underscore the increasingly vital role of independent agents in helping families make sense of complex risks and evolving coverage needs.
Affordability vs. Adequate Protection
Nationwide’s 2025 Homeowners Report found that homeowners’ top concerns include rising premiums, severe weather, and aging home systems. In fact, nearly 80% of agents said clients are reevaluating policies to save money, while 61% have seen others increase coverage to keep pace with higher home equity and repair costs.
It’s a delicate balance—one that often requires expert guidance. Local agents can help clients compare carriers, tailor deductibles, and explore coverage options that protect what matters most without overspending.
At YMI Insurance, we see this every day across the Lehigh Valley—Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, and Stroudsburg—as homeowners work to maintain the right balance between cost and protection.
From Reactive Coverage to Proactive Prevention
The article notes that more agents are helping homeowners move from reactive coverage to proactive prevention. About 85% of agents now recommend smart-home technology to reduce risk—like smoke and CO sensors, water flow monitors, and smart locks.
These tools can prevent costly claims and sometimes qualify homeowners for premium discounts. Yet, only about a quarter of homeowners have adopted such devices, even though water and electrical damage remain among the most frequent and expensive claims.
For Lehigh Valley homeowners, where aging homes and seasonal temperature swings are common, these simple tech upgrades can make a meaningful difference.
Education Is the Agent’s Superpower
The Hanover’s 2025 Homeowners Coverage Awareness Report also found that many families don’t fully understand what their policies cover—or what they don’t.
While awareness of umbrella and valuables coverage is high, fewer than 30% of homeowners actually carry those protections. Cyber insurance is even less common, with only 7% reporting that they’ve purchased a policy.
That lack of understanding can leave major gaps in financial protection. As The Hanover’s Daniel Halsey put it, agents play a “critical role in helping homeowners make informed decisions.”
At YMI, that’s exactly where we come in—translating insurance jargon into plain English and helping families understand their real exposure, whether it’s a liability risk, an outdated dwelling limit, or missing coverage for valuables or water damage.
Bringing It Home
Inflation, weather, and new technology are reshaping what homeowners need from their insurance—and from their agents. As Independent Agent’s AnneMarie McPherson Spears writes, “Protection starts with connection.”
That’s a philosophy we share. At YMI Insurance, we believe our job isn’t just to insure your home—it’s to help you protect it, understand it, and plan for the future.
