It’s Not All About the Great Outdoors!

By January 21, 2011January 30th, 2023No Comments

When someone hears “the Poconos”, the first picture that comes to mind is typically our scenic mountains – a region abounding in activity options for the avid athlete and outdoorsman.  And, though it is true, as home to several ski resorts, 9 state parks and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, our Pocono Mountains offer an extensive variety of outdoor activities to entertain tourists and local residents, we are just as fortunate to have some terrific options for those who prefer indoor entertainment.  Theater comes to mind…

Theater has a wonderfully rich history in our area.  A perfect example of such a theater rich in history is Stroudsburg’s very own Sherman Theater.  Built in 1928, the Sherman opened with a performance by the comedy team Laurel and Hardy.  The historical theater at 524 Main Street has seen many changes and resurrections since that opening performance; it has been a cinema, community theater, performing arts center, and even a church for a short time.  Most recently renovated in 2005, the theater is now run by The Fine Arts Discovery Series Inc. (nonprofit 501c3 organization).  Over the past several years, the Sherman Theater has become a thriving landmark symbol of entertainment here in Stroudsburg.

As I was trying to figure out how best to explain all the Sherman Theater has to offer, I thought who better to tell us than the President and CEO, Rich Berkowitz.  So, in his own words:

“The theater was initially renovated in 2005 – focused on bringing back economic vitality to Downtown Stroudsburg and the greater Pocono Region.  In 2010, the Sherman attracted over 84,000 patrons to the downtown district with its shows, concerts and community events.  In January 2011, the Sherman was named to the Pollstar (the leading publication of the concert industry) Top 100 list; in fact, the Sherman found itself at #83.

Not only do we produce some of the hottest concerts of the day like Ke$ha, Sean Kingston, David Archuletta, Train, Furthur, Vienna Choir Boys and much more, we also produce a ton of community based events including Community Theater, dance events, community fundraisers and two big festivals –  Stroudfest and Pocono Raceway Festival.

The Sherman shows are bringing thousands of people back to the downtown market as well as providing a boost to the tourist business.  At the same time, we create convenience and add to the quality of life of our year-round residents. The Sherman added nearly $4,000,000 to the local economy last year in addition to adding nearly $400,000 to the state and local tax collection.  I am most proud that we can make this kind of economic impact to the region – adding jobs, business and quality of life for our residents.”

Clearly, the Sherman offers something for everybody.  In addition to national celebrity performances, I would like to include the showcasing of local talent as one of the most attractive qualities of this theater.  If you get the opportunity, attend a performance by Stroudsburg’s own amazingly talented singer/song-writer/musician, Christian Porter! http://www.facebook.com/#!/christianportermusic

Well, the calendar is packed for the next few months at the Sherman Theater, so if you’re looking for an indoor activity in our beautiful Pocono Mountains, be sure to consider taking in a performance!  Better yet, make it dinner and a show…arrive early and dine at one of the many unique area restaurants.
